When you use any mail delivery service – the USPS for even UPS, they always offer the option that you could insure your shipment. You probably always wonder about it. Should you pay extra to insure? It's quite a rare that anything should get damaged in transit. And you don't know anyone who's actually collected.

Well, sometimes it really is risky, the idea of sending something through a mail delivery service without insuring it. It could be a fragile and very valuable item. People who do try the insurance offered by a mail delivery service though and who have the bad luck to see the item damaged or lost in transit, too often find that they have a great deal of trouble getting them to pay up.

Because as with any insurance company, there's a lot of fine print that helps them get out of having to accept responsibility.

If something arrives broken, they can just say that you didn't pack it properly. Certainly, everything you send by FedEx or UPS or any of those other guys, is insured by default for up to $100. Up to that amount, you can rest easy. Beyond that, you’re practically on your own. FedEx doesn't even offer you an insurance option. They depend on wording in their contract that frees them of all responsibility for anything over $500.
