For a smooth icing for the cake one should ensure that their cake is cool enough and that their frosting is not very thick. Thinner icing makes for easy spreading and an even, smoother finish. According to seasoned bakers, getting an even, smooth finishing on a cake is the most difficult part of cake decorating and one should therefore practice the frosting and icing techniques to always get a beautiful finish for their cakes. For people who would like to have geometric and themed decorations for their cakes, it is advisable to use stencil in making the designs.

What You Never Knew about Your Gourmet Grocer

Author: Rhoden at 8-05-2012, 07:19, Views: 34

Remember how it used to be that if you wanted to taste gourmet food, you had to go to some expensive restaurant for it? These days, gourmet products are so popular, you can get your hands on some of this exclusive stuff at a local gourmet grocer as well.

But just because you go to a gourmet grocer for expensive salads and other things, doesn't mean that it's healthy. You been hearing a lot about how botulism in German cucumbers and other greens have killed people, right? Any kind of food at the supermarket or anywhere else, no matter how healthy an exclusive no matter how healthy exclusive the food they the display is, if it's grown incorrectly and handled incorrectly at the store, you're going to have to deal with food poisoning. The lesson here is – just because you go to gourmet grocer, don't assume that it's healthy stuff.

The gourmet food industry is worth about $50 billion. It's worth that much though because they know that they can get away with charging whatever they want. People are always willing to pay for premium stuff. You'll find the exact same stuff selling at twice the price at a different gourmet grocer outlet. Garden of Eden for instance, sells everything usually at twice the price of Trader Joe's.

Author: Rhoden at 25-04-2012, 02:05, Views: 33

Until the 1990s if you brought up “farmers markets” to anyone, they’d think you were talking about some quaint colonial era system where farmers brought their produce to market. These days though, farmers markets can be big business.

To anyone who wants to bypass the clunky and overcomplicated system by which the supermarkets source produce from all over the world, buying directly from farmers in the area is often a great way to go.

Over the past 10 years, farmers markets have really grown across the country. There about 5000 outlets now for anyone who wants to buy local in-season produce. The government has really been doing its part to, to make farmers markets possible.

Some Vegetarian Recipes Are Very Good

Author: mbc at 23-04-2012, 10:40, Views: 17

I am one of the world's biggest carnivores, while my younger sister is a vegetarian. All of the time we have cookouts where I have to cook her veggie burgers, while the rest of us eat burgers, hot dogs and sausage. She decided one day to try some vegetarian recipes of her own, and I have to admit that I was skeptical. It was not long, however, before I was actually requesting some of the meals she made, knowing full well that they were all meatless.

The first thing she made for me was cheese enchiladas. She knows how much I like Mexican food and wanted me to try them the way that she made them. I don't know if she had perfected the proper seasonings or had stumbled across a book of great vegetarian recipes, but they were absolutely delicious. We went over to her house one night for dinner, and I ended up taking some of her enchiladas in my lunch to work the next day.

Then there was a Sunday dinner where we often get together as an extended family and eat. My sister made vegetarian lasagna that she got from a book of vegetarian recipes and served it as one of the main courses offered for the night. I decided to try it, mainly to be polite, and it was absolutely fantastic! I actually got a second portion of the lasagna before the meal was over, and I did not do that for either of the other two main courses, both of which contained meat.

Great Ideas for Cheap Seafood

Author: mbc at 23-04-2012, 09:41, Views: 17

In many homes, seafood for dinner is a special treat. You get lobster for dinner when there is an anniversary or when it's Valentine's Day. Shrimp cocktail or wild salmon is what marks the visit of important guests. It is this way because seafood is expensive. But fish and other members of this class of foods can be extremely nutritious, too. It's hardly fair to deny yourself this source of nutrition; a daily menu that includes some seafood can be a great way to stay healthy and still be lean. If only cheap seafood were a reality.

But it can be, if you know how. You just need to know what kind of seafood to go for. And you need to be sure that you stay safe from salmonella and other food poisoning nasties.

Smoked salmon, if you buy it at the seafood counter can cost you $40 a pound. Is there any way you can enjoy smoked salmon on a bagel with cream cheese without bankrupting yourself? Well, you certainly can't buy it very cheap; but you could get half off by buying smoked salmon trimmings. When you buy the full retail product, there's a lot around the edges and other places that the butchers have trimmed off – to dress the meat to make it look good.

Learn How Gas Barbecue Grills Clean up

Author: Rhoden at 9-04-2012, 09:27, Views: 13

Retail merchants certainly know how to display their wares. They know that they just have to display their outdoor gas barbecue grills to look all shiny and glamorous, and people with nearly no experience will really believe they can whip up great outdoor meals much to everyone's admiration.

Of course, one thing's clear when they display gas barbecue grills that way – they don't believe that you're actually serious about getting things done on your new grill. Because if you were that kind of person, why wouldn't you just fix your old grill that's been sitting out there on your back porch for ages?

Well, gas barbecue grills happen to be heavy-duty pieces of steel. Of course no one actually looks forward to getting these fixed. If you have someone map the process out for you though, you really could think of it as something that is doable.

Difficult-to-Swallow Things the Snack Food Industry Never Tells You

Author: mbc at 6-04-2012, 07:59, Views: 96

In the movie The Sweetest Thing, one of the characters opens a bag of potato chips made of the synthetic fat substitute Olestra, and digs in. Then he notices that the package says something about anal leakage. “What kind of marketing brainiac puts anal leakage on his product?”, he wonders, as he spits everything out. Well, the brainiac in question here is the American snack food industry.

Notice that we are talking about the American snack food industry as opposed to the British or the Canadian ones. Because Olestra products are banned over there. If you eat anything with Olestra in it (Procter & Gamble since they've sold millions servings of stuff with Olestra and it) you could count yourself lucky if you got anal leakage. That's the least of it.

The snackfood industry doesn't stop there, of course. Not by a long shot. How about recombinant bovine growth hormone that they inject into cows to make them produce 15% more milk? This stuff apparently doesn't just stay in the cow. That's no problem as far as American ice cream makers are concerned.

Learning to Dehydrate Food Right at Home

Author: Rhoden at 5-04-2012, 03:14, Views: 19

If you're thinking of getting started trying to dehydrate food at home, you certainly are on to one of the best ways to preserve food possible. The great thing about dehydrating food is that it helps you preserve food that you can't use without destroying its nutritional value. And it helps you do this in the safest way possible.

To dehydrate food at home preserves the nutritional value in it because home dehydration units use gentle heat. Why, when experts try to evaluate the loss of nutrition associated with commercial food dehydration – a process that gets done at much higher heat levels – they still find that the loss in nutritional value is minimal. And, when you compare the nutrition loss in home dehydration to the kind of nutritional loss to what happens when you can it or freeze it, there's just no comparing them.

To be more specific, the Vitamin A in dehydrated food is completely preserved. You just have to be careful that you don't store dehydrated food anywhere there is bright light. Since vitamin C is something that is lost to the air, there certainly is some loss when you dehydrate food. The more you slice and dice foods that you wish to dehydrate, the more it's going to lose this vitamin. But there is no choice in the matter that they have – things have to be cut into small pieces if they are to be tried effectively.
