Designing a Video Game: the Steps Involved

Author: mbc at 9-05-2012, 08:31, Views: 40

If you think about it, the Michael Douglas–Sean Penn movie The Game is about giving the rich and decadent the ultimate videogame-like experience. The movie is about how you can take someone who has a regular life, and put them in fantastic James Bond-Lara Croft like situations where they have horrible things happen to them, but they somehow escape unscathed. Well, designing a videogame is all about putting a person in the kind of situations that Michael Douglas found himself in in the movie. Except that it's all virtual.

It's about taking someone who has a regular life and elevating him to a different plane altogether.

When you come away from playing a game, you're supposed to feel like you've been through an experience – not like you’re just playing a game. Designing a videogame takes a designer who has a spectacular grasp over the nuts and bolts of programming, of design, art and at least a half-dozen other disciplines. It's a wonder that there are as many people out there designing a videogame as there are.

Educational Games Can Also Be Fun

Author: mbc at 24-04-2012, 07:18, Views: 13

As conscientious parents, my wife and I are always looking for educational games that will work our children's minds and allow them to have fun at the same time. Often, people will assume that such games will be too boring for children to enjoy, but it has been our experience that educational games can also be fun.

One of the educational games that we play on a regular basis that I think is the most fun is Scrabble. It is a bit difficult for our kids to play at this point, but each year, they get a little bit better. My wife and I find that our children will actually ask us if we can play it now, and we are always willing to do so. One of the things we find most endearing is when one of our children comes up with an impressive word and they immediately look at one of us for approval. Of course, my wife and I lavish it on them and it is easy to see they are beaming with pride, and their vocabularies are improving with each game.

Suitable Computer Games for Kids

Your children may want to play your Facebook games, but they should not have their own profile until they are thirteen. They may also want to play other games on sites like Pogo.com, but there are not ways to monitor who is talking to your child and how much access they may have to your child's personal information. What is a parent to do then when their child wants to play online games for kids? You can watch over their shoulder, or you could take a more sane approach and find safe, secure, and fun places for them to play. There are some great places out there.

If your daughter is into things like Webkins or Littlest Pet Shop, they have online games that they can play. These can be social games, but they are far safer online games for kids than what you would find elsewhere. At the very most, they would have to share a user name with someone to make a friend, but that should be about it. You do have to monitor what they are doing though, because someone could ask them personal questions in a chat format that are not in line with what are acceptable. Monitor them, but feel a bit safer because these are designed to be safer than other online areas.

Getting the Best Monitor for Gaming

Author: mbc at 16-01-2012, 21:37, Views: 56

If all you're doing with your computer is a little web browsing and messing about with Microsoft Office, you’ll have no problem with any regular monitor off the shelf at your local electronics store. If on the other hand, you play fast motion video games, your interests lie in a whole other kind of monitor. A gaming monitor is usually judged to completely different standards than regular ones are. Here's what you look for when you go shopping next for the best monitor for gaming.

Monitors for gaming – role-playing games, racing games, first-person shooting games or even some massively multiplayer online role-playing games – need to be built so that they can respond very quickly to what's going on in the game. If you’ve ever looked at the kind of equipment serious gamers buy, their choices usually reflect an almost fanatical attention to making sure that nothing delays their responses to happenings on-screen. A gaming mouse has to be extra fast; and so, they won't use wireless products. They use special $50 Teflon-coated mouse pads to make sure that there is no resistance, and so on.
