Need Help to Quit Smoking?

Author: Rhoden at 9-05-2012, 22:51, Views: 80

If you smoke, you probably want to quit. Even if you wish you could smoke forever, you realize that if you want to have a good life and you want to have quality at the end of your life, you have to find help to quit smoking. Smokers have shorter lives, even if they never get cancer, and many have trouble drawing breath in the later years of their life. This hardly makes for a fun retirement. There is help out there and there are also things that you can do on your own to ensure that you are giving yourself every chance to quit so that you can be around to meet your grandchildren and even your great-grandchildren.

There are plenty of over-the-counter aids that you can use to help quit smoking. There are gums, which you do not chew so much as crush between your teeth, patches, and electronic cigarettes. The gums are easy to use to stop a craving in the moment. The patch tries to hold you back from smoking while weaning your system from the nicotine over the course of a few weeks or longer if you need it. The electronic cigarette delivers nicotine without the chemicals from the smoke. All of these can help if you use them as directed.

Watching Out Before You Hire Personal Trainers

Author: Rhoden at 9-05-2012, 22:49, Views: 30

Personal trainers ply their trade in an ill-defined space. No one really knows what a personal trainer is supposed to do really; or knows how to prove it when they don't do it well. Personal trainers, basically, are specialists in one thing – getting you to believe that they are health experts of some kind.

Apparently, there are a lot of us who are buying that line. Because about 7 million Americans are signed up with personal trainers. Since a client once signed up can be a real cash cow, personal trainers have been sent into the frenzy of sorts these days, trying to show themselves up to be better than the competition. They will train to specialize in all kinds of things to do with exercise and try to present themselves as extra-qualified for the job.

Often though, what they call “specialized training” is nothing better than a simple weekend course that costs $500 and asks them to sift through a simple online multiple-choice quiz. This can be quite a dangerous thing. When a personal trainer holds himself up to be a specialist in exercise for diabetics, he’d better know what he's doing. Otherwise, a patient of diabetes might easily succumb to vision loss or nerve damage of the feet.

What You Wish Eye Doctors Would Tell You

Author: mbc at 9-05-2012, 08:34, Views: 27

For the longest time, we’ve just known about two kinds of eye doctors – the ones who had a degree in optometry and fitted you for glasses, and the ones who had an M.D. and who checked you for eye diseases and gave you eye drops. Well, no longer is it a simple as that anymore. These days, optometrists are licensed to prescribe drugs and even just do eye surgery.

Of course, the MDs don't like any of it. It makes them feel less necessary. They argue that an optometrist hasn't exactly been to med school. Well, all of this just leaves the average person on the street with a big unanswered question about whom to go to.

Well, if you just have a regular checkup in mind or maybe some kind of mild infection on the outside, an optometrist should be just fine. You could check out the websites of the American Academy of Optometry or the American Optometric Association to find a good optometrist in your area.

Diagnosing Autism in Children as Early as Possible

Author: Rhoden at 9-05-2012, 00:12, Views: 33

Autism can strike in a child right from birth or very early in life. When it happens, it can be devastating. A child with autism very obviously falls short in the way he can establish social relationships, use language to interact with people and find things to do. When a child has problems in all these areas and others still, that's when diagnosing autism in children becomes quite important.

These days, doctors diagnosing autism in children no longer refer to it now as such. They preferred to diagnose a child as somehow having something that belongs to a family of disorders called the autism spectrum disorders. Once a doctor is able to diagnose a child as suffering from one of the spectrum disorders, more in-depth diagnosis is called for.

Diagnosing autism in children who are really young – say under three years – may not really be possible. Children that young for instance, don't really have to do anything much that you could call them abnormal or anything. Yet, diagnosing the problem as early as possible is really important. The earlier a doctor intervenes and provides treatment and care, the better the treatment can take hold. It can improve communication skills, help tone down bad behavior that's difficult to control and so on.

Cigarette Withdrawal Symptoms

Author: Rhoden at 8-05-2012, 07:03, Views: 20

You might think that most people that smoke have no qualms about it and want to continue. The truth is that most people who smoke wish that they did not. Nicotine is a drug and it is one that is incredibly hard to get over. Smokers try time and time again before they finally quit. One of the biggest reasons why people have such a hard time quitting is because of cigarette withdrawal symptoms. These are very powerful and they can break even the most determined. Will power alone is not always the answer because these symptoms are so strong.

Those that quit will notice problems within a half an hour. The average craving for nicotine lasts about thirty seconds to three minutes. If a smoker can get through that time without lighting up, they will feel better, at least until the next craving. This seems like a short amount of time, but to the smoker it feels like hours. This is when cigarette withdrawal symptoms are at their worst and is when many cave. Even those that get past a few of these end up craving the next time one hits. The craving is stronger – much stronger than one who has never smoked could imagine.

Author: mbc at 7-05-2012, 10:08, Views: 20

If you are experiencing pain in your feet, you should figure out why. Though some foot pain symptoms simply mean that you are wearing bad shoes, these pains can mean something else. No matter what the source, there are things you can do to make some of the pain goes away, and some things may stay until you see your doctor for help. Some foot pain is normal if you are an athlete or if you are aging, but you should not have foot pain that goes on and on with no relief in sight. Hopefully, your fix will be an easy one and your foot pain will be a thing of the past.

Some foot pain symptoms have obvious causes. If you wear heels a lot and your feet ache at the end of the day, it is probably your shoes. Heels look good and are often worn by women who dress up for work, but they are not good for your body. Not only can they cause foot pain, they can also cause permanent damage to your foot, legs and even your back. Long term, constant wearing of heels will eventually cause you to have pain you cannot get rid of and may also lead to back pain that requires medical attention.

The Weight Loss Industry and its Love Affair with Fairy Tales

Author: mbc at 5-05-2012, 10:20, Views: 28

In today's world, the weight-loss industry takes up the place that snake oil used to take up a couple of centuries ago. There are few scientifically tested products and methods on the market, and people still fanatically believe in something or the other.

The Chinese Diet Tea for instance has the company that makes it claiming that you can lose a pound a day or thereabouts just by drinking a cup of the tea they sell for as little as $25 a month or so. They also give you a diet patch.

The law just caught up with them and fined them $2 million.

While not every company makes such clearly dubious claims, they do try. According to the Federal Trade Commission, one out of two advertisements by the weight-loss industry tends to be problematic. They'll say things like you can lose a pound a day, they'll say that drinking a cup of tea will work five times faster than if you completely went without food altogether, and so on.

What are Stem Cells and Why are They Important?

Author: mbc at 5-05-2012, 09:33, Views: 42

Even if you don't go around reading up on the latest in the world of science, it's quite likely that you've heard of the term “stem cells” more than once. All right, you know that there used to be controversy surrounding research into it because pro-life Christian fundamentalists thought it would encourage women to seek medical terminations and so on. So let's get everything straight here – what are stem cells ?

At the beginning of life, when a child is conceived, it doesn't grow all the complex organs and everything all at once. The fetus grows a lot of blank master cells that can later turn into specialized cells for whatever organ they are assigned to. They're kind of like a block of marble that a sculptor buys to turn into a work of art. He could turn it into the shape of a beautiful woman or he could turn it into the shape of a dinosaur. It's entirely up to him. That's what are stem cells – blank blocks of marble that return into anything.

The reason stem cells are important is that scientists have figured out how to take them and press them into service in a grown person who has serious injuries where cells will not grow themselves. It's not quite growing an arm and a leg when a person has suffered an accident; but it can make a quadriplegic possibly rejuvenates his nervous connections and move again.

A Nightmare Disorder Can Cause a Whole Slew of Problems

Author: mbc at 5-05-2012, 09:18, Views: 15

My younger sister suffered from a condition for years called Dream Anxiety Disorder, more commonly known as nightmare disorder. She had difficulty staying asleep because of the condition and suffered from a number of other issues as a result.

The worst aspect of a nightmare disorder is the fact that most people actually feel as if their life is at risk. I remember when my sister was struggling with the disorder, she would cry out and move her arms and legs frantically, and then wake up and would be gasping for breath. Typically, she would also be crying, and when we would ask her what was going on, she would say some of the most horrific things, like she was being pursued by a man with a large knife who had her cornered, or she was in a head-on collision that she could see coming for several blocks, but could do nothing about.

I remember one night in particular, she had been moaning for quite some time and finally woke with a start. She said that she had a dream where all of the members of her family had been shot, and she was trying to revive all of us to no avail. It was at that point that she really started to avoid sleep at all costs. I don't want to give the impression that his happened every night, because it did not. It did happen with enough frequency, however, that she would ask us to wake her up at the first sign that she started appearing uncomfortable while she was asleep.

Nerve Pain In Legs

Author: mbc at 5-05-2012, 09:16, Views: 5

Many people walk around in nerve pain in legs and they have no idea what is going on or how to change it. The fact is that nerve pain often comes from an injury that has nothing to do with the legs at all. Most of this pain radiates from and is rooted in the spine. If you feel this type of pain and it seems to be getting worse, you can do more than just deal with it. You should get it taken care of, especially if it seems that things are getting worse. You may have serious damage that needs immediate medical attention.

What you may not know is that not all leg pain comes from something you have done to your legs or your feet. Nerve pain in legs can come from the spine. This is often called sciatica and can be very painful. Those with this condition often do not understand that the pain is not based in their legs. They try to do things differently with their legs, feet, and footwear but nothing helps. This is because modifying the leg is not the answer. It does not matter how you stand on it or what you wear on your feet if the pain is coming from your back.

Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding

Author: mbc at 5-05-2012, 01:57, Views: 26

Being a woman is tough, but most get use to it and the small issues we have that men never have to worry about become such a part of life that we do not think twice about them. However, not all women can sail through life without having issues. One of the most tricky parts of the female body is the reproductive system. Some will experience some oddness at times, but there are some that have issues that last until menopause. If you have abnormal vaginal bleeding, do not freak out. It may be what is normal for you. However, finding out why is essential before you write it off as a normal function.

The 28 day menstrual cycle is not the norm for every woman, no matter what you may learn in health class. Some women have shorter cycles and they are normal for them. Some women can have six weeks cycles, and those are normal for them. However, once you know what your normal cycle is and things suddenly change and are accompanied by abnormal vaginal bleeding, you should see a doctor to find out what might be going on. You could be pregnant, or you could have a condition that needs treatment.
