Autism can strike in a child right from birth or very early in life. When it happens, it can be devastating. A child with autism very obviously falls short in the way he can establish social relationships, use language to interact with people and find things to do. When a child has problems in all these areas and others still, that's when diagnosing autism in children becomes quite important.

These days, doctors diagnosing autism in children no longer refer to it now as such. They preferred to diagnose a child as somehow having something that belongs to a family of disorders called the autism spectrum disorders. Once a doctor is able to diagnose a child as suffering from one of the spectrum disorders, more in-depth diagnosis is called for.

Diagnosing autism in children who are really young – say under three years – may not really be possible. Children that young for instance, don't really have to do anything much that you could call them abnormal or anything. Yet, diagnosing the problem as early as possible is really important. The earlier a doctor intervenes and provides treatment and care, the better the treatment can take hold. It can improve communication skills, help tone down bad behavior that's difficult to control and so on.
