What You Wish Eye Doctors Would Tell You

Author: mbc at 9-05-2012, 08:34, Views: 27

For the longest time, we’ve just known about two kinds of eye doctors – the ones who had a degree in optometry and fitted you for glasses, and the ones who had an M.D. and who checked you for eye diseases and gave you eye drops. Well, no longer is it a simple as that anymore. These days, optometrists are licensed to prescribe drugs and even just do eye surgery.

Of course, the MDs don't like any of it. It makes them feel less necessary. They argue that an optometrist hasn't exactly been to med school. Well, all of this just leaves the average person on the street with a big unanswered question about whom to go to.

Well, if you just have a regular checkup in mind or maybe some kind of mild infection on the outside, an optometrist should be just fine. You could check out the websites of the American Academy of Optometry or the American Optometric Association to find a good optometrist in your area.

Better Eyesight can be Tough after 40

Author: Rhoden at 5-04-2012, 03:18, Views: 60

When you're young and you need glasses, your problem is fairly straightforward – you have myopia, you can't see the chalkboard when your teacher writes, you can't see clearly across the aisle at what your best friend is writing on her math quiz sheet – and you know you need glasses for better eyesight.

Things tend to get a little bit more complicated when you hit your 40s. Often, you can't see objects that are at a distance, but then you can't even see things that are close by. Nothing seems to really work properly as far as your eyes are concerned (and maybe a few other things as well). Your problem is a condition that hits nearly every person over 40 – it's called presbyopia.

This is when the material of the lens in your eye begins to become less pliable. When you're young and you are shortsighted, you just can't see things that are at a distance. You can hold anything 1 inch from your eyes and still focus perfectly. Once presbyopia hits though, you can't even do that. You can’t see far, and you can’t see close by.

Does your Child have a Blister on her Eye? Try these Sty Treatment Options

Author: mbc at 31-01-2012, 18:50, Views: 44

In white coat language, they call it a hordeolum. Laypeople call it a sty or a stye. It's an angry red bump on the edge of the eyelid, along the eyelash line. It gets to be tender and quite painful. Your eyes will get crusty when this happens. Of course, it's not a dangerous thing, but it certainly is irritating and painful. Of course, you want to get rid of one of these as soon as possible. They are painful and they look scary. The good part is, most of the time, no special sty treatment is necessary. They just pop and drain on their own in a week or so.

Still, if it’s your child, you don't want to keep one on your child's eyelid a full week. It's hard to get them to stop worrying the sty with their hands. It isn't just that they'll accidentally pop it one day. There is also risk in how they could be rubbing their eyes with dirty hands all the time and getting an even worse infection of another kind.

Getting Colored Contact Lenses Non Prescription

Author: Rhoden at 21-01-2012, 13:39, Views: 49

To many people, colored contacts are like the accessories they pick out for their clothes on a day. They like to pick up a pair out that goes with their clothes or something each day. It's kind of like picking a shade for their hair or picking shade for their nails. Lenses happen to be medical devices even if they are used purely for cosmetic purposes. And so, colored contact lenses, nonprescription or otherwise, need to come from an eye care professional at least at first – from someone who is able to guide you in the matter.

You can get colored contact lenses non-prescription or over-the-counter. Retailers often treat them kind of the way they treat regular clothing accessories. If you can come across those lenses here or elsewhere, should you get them?

Now in this country, you need a doctor's prescription for these lenses. But this isn't to get you to believe that the rule somehow only applies if you need lenses that correct your vision. That's not true at all. Whether you need corrective contact lenses or not, in North America and in many countries in Europe, you certainly do need the doctor’s say so.

Why Does It Cost so Much More to Buy Colored Contacts?

Author: Rhoden at 19-01-2012, 04:50, Views: 58

Now when you go in to buy colored contacts, you expect to pay something more than you would for regular lenses – because these are cosmetic items. You believe the manufacturers know that they can get away with asking for more. But really, should they cost more?

Actually, colored contact lenses run the gamut in the prices they go for. But basically, compared to regular contact lenses of similar description, colored ones cost about 75% more. Acuvue for instance sells colored contact lenses for $30 a box; the same company sells regular contacts at $20 a box. So why should you pay more to buy colored contacts? Is there anything that high-tech that goes into them that they should charge this much more?

Of course, manufacturers don't just pull those prices out of a hat. There are a few defensible reasons why they should charge more. To begin with, they do have to invest extra in the design of colored contacts. The lenses do have to look realistic, deep and beautiful. Artistry costs money.
