A hangover can feel terrible. Your head pounds, your salivary glands don't seem to work at all and your mouth feels like sandpaper, and you’re nauseous all the time. There is a small industry out there that functions just to help with a cure for a hangover, and you can get most of these products over the counter at the drugstore. But how do you know what to choose?

Let's start with prevention before we get to the cure. If you do have to drink a lot because you're celebrating or something, do so on a full stomach. Make sure that you don't drink more than one glass an hour, try not to mix your drinks, and keep yourself hydrated with plenty of water. In fact, make it a rule to drink a glass of water for every alcoholic drink that you knock back. Water happens to be very important for hangover prevention. Extreme dehydration is one of the reasons we get hangovers.

But since we're more interested in a cure for a hangover right now, let's take a look at what the drugstore has. Painkillers like Excedrin can work very well. Excedrin is acetaminophen laced with caffeine. Now acetaminophen is a painkiller that'll help with your headache. But you can't take it together with alcohol. It mixes with the stuff and becomes toxic to your liver. Caffeine will help tighten up your blood vessels, and it should help you deal with the headache too. Just make sure that you stay hydrated when you take Excedrin.
