To a few people who really live for their aquarium hobby, they don't really need it to give them anything dramatic or entertaining. They're happy just pottering about with all the everyday things they can do. For the rest of us though, running and maintaining an aquarium can get a bit old after a while. Well, if that’s how it feels, it's usually because we haven’t learned how to set up an aquarium to be exciting. The aquarium hobbyist’s market is flooded with all kinds of cute and fun little props and other things to use. All you need to do is to think differently.

Now before you allow yourself to get carried away with all kinds of ideas for how to set up an aquarium to be crazy fun, you have to understand that you can't just throw anything in there that looks colorful and cute. You see, fish are very small creatures. And that tank of yours is pretty small, too.

Just imagine what it would be like if someone shut you up in a 10 foot room with no windows or anything and just kept you there forever. Imagine next what it would be like if they put in your room, something that smelled awful – a large cheap plastic doll for instance. Pretty soon you, the cheap plastic would stink your room up. You might even get a headache from all the fumes.

Betta fish tend to be among the most beautiful fish in any aquarium. Everyone does know that Betta fish are the easiest to care for of all fish. What's less well known though is that they're very easy if you're interested in breeding them, too. If this is your first time breeding fish, you should try breeding Betta fish first. As easy and as rewarding as such a venture might be, there still are a few things you need to keep in mind.

The first problem is actually not a real problem. It's just that breeding Betta fish is so easy that it's likely that pretty soon, you'll have hundreds of little Betta fish crowding your tank. The fish evolved to breed in a large water body with lots of space to spread out – not in a five-gallon tank. What do you do if your aquarium isn't the size of a football field? You'll have to be prepared to throw them away.

Cleaning a tank occupied by Betta fish is the same as cleaning a tank with any fish. You don't have to change more than half of water at a given time. And try to stir the bottom up as much is possible as you clear the water out. You want to be able to get as much of the dirt that’s settled down. Make sure that you never change more than half the water in a tank at a time.
