Whenever I have someone walk through my door and tell me that they don't have a drug or alcohol use issue, I almost feel my heart leaping for joy! I am a probation officer, and find that the vast majority of my probationers have issues with substance abuse. Consequently, I always have substance abuse information on hand and resources that can help them address their problems as soon as possible.
I had a probationer come in for a field intake the other day, and I asked him about his offense. He explained that he was out with some friends and they had drugs on them. He informed me that he had no issues with drugs, but was just working as the delivery guy. I asked him about any past drug use history, and he denied using anything. I tried to provide him with substance abuse information, which he declined, insisting there was no issue with drugs, so I let him go.
It may seem odd that I would offer him substance abuse information, but I have learned two important things over the years. First and foremost, when a probationer is involved in a drug related offense, nine times out of 10, he also has a drug issue. The second thing, and this is the most important thing, is that probationers lie! I know it is hard to believe, but probationers will actually lie to their officers to make themselves look better.
