You may think that your child is doing just fine in school because they can read you book after book. They may read the words and even sound out the hard ones, making you very proud of them. They may even seem to be ahead of the rest of their class. That very well could be the case, but do not jump for joy so quickly. Some kids are great readers but they are not understanding or comprehending what they are reading as they go. If your child is having problems with this, you have to get them help to improve reading comprehension. Without it, they are going to struggle all the way through school.
Comprehension means understanding and taking in what they read. Some people can read and read and read but when they put the book down, they really cannot tell you much about it and they cannot tell you the moral or idea of the story. They do not comprehend the material, meaning that if they remember anything, they are probably just repeating. That is different than comprehending. A child that reads well but does poorly on tests and cannot seem to follow instructions for work may need help to improve reading comprehension.
